Frequently asked questions

All who utilize parking on the Blacksburg campus, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors, must purchase parking Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. This could include displaying a valid parking permit; paying the daily parking charge through the ParkMobile app or Parking Services; or paying the hourly parking charge through ParkMobile or at a parking meter.

While balancing the requirement for Parking Services to be fully-self funded and a financially healthy enterprise, Parking Services strives to offer a range of parking options that are equitable, flexible, and convenient that meet our university community’s needs.

Prior to the 2020-21 academic year, the burden of generating this revenue fell solely on students and employees on campus wishing to park a vehicle – while visitors, including departmental visitors, were able to park free of charge. By charging everyone that utilizes our services (parks on campus,) we can strive to keep parking costs down for all.

The Controller’s Office, in conjunction with Transportation Services, is implementing a new Departmental Parking Payment Certification form for departmental purchases of visitor permits, event spaces & leasing, and other services acquired through Transportation Services. The new form replaces the Controller’s Office approval that was previously required. Procedure 90200: Departmental Parking Payment details the requirements related to using university funds for these activities and outlines step-by-step instructions to obtain transportation services. For questions, please reach out to parking@vt.edu.

For large events, please work with Parking Services Special Events Coordinator Graham Smith (grsmith3@vt.edu) for arrangements. Pricing for large events will be based on the number of spaces and the duration of the event. Items of consideration for approval include time of day, day of week, need for parking officers to monitor spaces, general utilization of spaces, need for equipment (signs, cones, barricades), and other demands on spaces at the time of the event. Parking lot assignments are subject to availability.

The special events coordinator will work with you to determine the best arrangements for your group, and help you coordinate your communications to your participants.
