Student Parking
To meet the parking and transportation needs of the university's student population, Virginia Tech Parking Services provides a variety of parking permit options, sustainable transportation choices, and parking resources.
Virginia Tech parking permits are virtual and associated with the vehicle's license plate. No physical permit or hangtag is issued or required to be displayed.
Students are responsible for ensuring that their license plate, state, and vehicle information are entered correctly in the Parking Services Parking Portal.
Permits may be purchased online through the Parking Portal.
Resident Student Parking
For students living on campus
The Resident parking permit is available to students living in Virginia Tech residence halls or the Oak Lane Community with an active university housing contract.
Where You May Park
A Resident permit allows parking in spaces designated:
- R — Resident
Resident parking is available in designated areas including:
- Duck Pond Road Resident Lot
- Stadium Lot
- Chicken Hill Lot
- Oak Lane
Resident permit holders must park only in spaces authorized for Resident parking.
The Stadium Lot, Chicken Hill Lot, and other campus parking locations may be affected by home football games, basketball games, and other special events. Vehicles must be relocated by the communicated deadline when these areas are scheduled for event use.
Important Information for All Student Permit Holders
A Virginia Tech parking permit provides authorization to park in specific campus areas based on the permit type. A parking permit does not guarantee the availability of a parking space.
A valid Virginia Tech parking permit or other authorized payment is required to park on campus from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday, except where otherwise posted.
This requirement applies whenever the university is open, including when classes are not in session and during semester breaks.
Permit holders must comply with all posted signs, pavement markings, parking restrictions, and temporary lot-disruption notices.
After 5 p.m.
After 5 p.m., Resident and Commuter/Graduate permit holders may park in regular Faculty/Staff and student parking spaces, provided the space or lot is not designated or signed as 24-hour restricted.
Reserved spaces, service vehicle spaces, ADA-accessible spaces, admissions spaces, carpool spaces, loading areas, and other specially restricted spaces remain restricted as posted.
Special Events and Lot Closures
Parking may be restricted in certain campus locations before home football games, basketball games, or other university events.
Vehicles must be removed from affected areas by the communicated or posted deadline.
Permit holders should review the Football Parking and Basketball Parking information and follow all Parking Services communications regarding event-related parking impacts and relocation requirements.
Overnight Parking
Overnight parking is permitted only in designated Resident parking areas with a valid Resident parking permit, unless otherwise specifically authorized by Parking Services.
Parking Near Dining Halls
Parking near campus dining facilities is strictly enforced because of traffic congestion, limited parking availability, pedestrian activity, and the need to maintain access for service and delivery vehicles.
Stopping briefly to pick up food does not allow a vehicle to park in a restricted area.
Please remember:
- Activating your hazard or emergency flashers does not authorize parking in a restricted space or area.
- Leaving a passenger inside the vehicle does not change the vehicle's parking status.
- Leaving the vehicle running does not exempt the vehicle from parking regulations.
- Vehicles parked in unauthorized areas may be cited and, where applicable, towed.
Students picking up food should park in a location authorized by their permit or use another available parking or transportation option.
Changes in Student or Employment Status
If a student's eligibility, residential status, or university affiliation changes and the student's current parking permit is no longer appropriate, the student must obtain the appropriate permit within five business days.
Students enrolled in summer classes, returning for the fall semester, or working in a wage position at Virginia Tech during the summer are not eligible to purchase a Faculty/Staff permit solely because of that employment.
Parking with a permit that does not correspond with the individual's current eligibility, residential status, or employment classification may result in a citation for Unauthorized Parking or Permit Misuse, as applicable.
Students are responsible for ensuring that their parking account, vehicle information, and permit selection remain accurate throughout the permit year.
