ADA Accessible Parking

Accessible parking spaces on the Blacksburg and Alexandria campuses are reserved exclusively for individuals displaying a valid, state-issued Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) accessible parking placard or license plate.

A DMV accessible placard or license plate is required to park in an accessible parking space. These credentials are issued by a state DMV to individuals with a qualifying disability lasting six weeks or longer.

Virginia Tech Parking Permit Required

A DMV-issued accessible placard or license plate does not replace the requirement for a Virginia Tech parking permit or other valid parking authorization.

All faculty, staff, students, and visitors must have both:

  • A valid DMV-issued accessible placard or license plate; and
  • A valid Virginia Tech parking permit or other approved parking authorization.

Virginia Tech parking permits are virtual and are associated with the vehicle’s license plate. No physical Virginia Tech permit or hangtag is required to be displayed.

Individuals who do not have an annual Virginia Tech parking permit may purchase a one-day parking permit through the Parking Services Parking Portal. https://virginiatech.t2hosted.com/Account/Portal

ParkMobile payment is valid only in designated ParkMobile parking locations. It does not authorize parking in an accessible space unless that space is located within an area specifically designated for ParkMobile parking.

Remote parking permits are valid only in designated Remote parking areas.

Proper Use of Accessible Parking

A valid DMV-issued accessible placard or license plate authorizes the use of designated accessible parking spaces but does not exempt the user from Virginia Tech parking regulations.

Accessible permit holders must:

  • Park within the marked accessible parking space.
  • Follow all posted signs and pavement markings.
  • Avoid spaces with additional restrictions, including Research, Faculty Principal, Reserved, or other specifically designated spaces.
  • Never park in an accessible access aisle.

A person without a disability may display an accessible parking placard or use an accessible parking space only when transporting the person to whom the placard or plate was issued.

Parking Services may request the DMV-issued Disabled Parking Placard Identification Card to verify the authorized use of an accessible placard.

Unauthorized vehicles parked in accessible spaces may be cited and towed at the owner’s expense. The misuse or illegal possession of an accessible placard or license plate may also result in fines, disciplinary action, towing, or prosecution. ADA spaces are Strictly enforced.

Accessible Transportation

Disabled individuals may also use the Blacksburg Transit Para-Transit system, which has lift-equipped vehicles for on and off campus transportation needs. For more information, contact Blacksburg Transit at 540-443-1533.

Temporary Medical Disability Permits

A Virginia Tech temporary medical disability permit (TMD) is available for students having mobility impairments lasting six weeks or less. If the disability qualifies for a disabled permit, it should be obtained from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Virginia State law prohibits the use of temporary medical disability permits at disabled spaces at any time.

The temporary medical disability permit is valid only with a Virginia Tech commuter, graduate, or resident parking permit and allows students to park in any faculty/staff areas.

A temporary medical disability permit can be obtained at the Parking Services Office by completing a request form and presenting a request slip from Student Health Services or a doctor’s statement. This documentation must include how long the disability requires special parking. Temporary medical disability permits can only be issued for a six-week period. If a special needs permit is needed for longer than six weeks, the student will need to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to inquire about a disabled permit.

Unauthorized use of a temporary medical disability permit carries a $300 fine to the person wrongfully displaying the permit.

There is a $20 replacement charge on permits that are lost or stolen.
