First Time Riders
The Virginia Tech campus is very bicycle friendly, which makes it easier for new cyclists to get around the area. Making the transition from driving to bicycling can seem daunting, but there are plenty of tips and resources to get you started. From repair stations to the Roam NRV bike share program, there are plenty of resources around campus. Here are some tips for being comfortable on the roads and sidewalks on campus and in town:
- Always be aware of your surroundings: Traffic and pedestrian foot traffic can change at any moment. Please be aware while riding a bicycle. Do not wear headphones or use a cellphone while riding.
- Use your gears! Come see us at the Hokie Bike Hub if you are having trouble figuring this out! Making sure your gears work will make bicycling much easier on Blacksburg's hilly terrain.
Plan your route to avoid traffic. We have a form on our website where we can help you with this!
Rember that every trip you take will make bicycling easier. The more you ride, the more your body and mind will get used to riding alongside vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
For all riders, Virginia Tech and Blacksburg both have their own policies to ensure the safety of everyone on the roads. Here is what you need to know about them:
Bicyclists are permitted on all roadways, concrete and asphalt pathways, except in the Blacksburg downtown commercial zone.
Bicyclists must obey all the laws of vehicular traffic while on the roadway.
Bicycles must be parked at bicycle racks, unless given special permission by a department head on campus. If you are in a dorm, your roomate must agree to let you keep your bicycle in your room.
Helmets are only required for ages 14 and younger but encouraged for everyone else.
There are plenty of resources around Blacksburg for experienced and newer bicyclists to utilize. The resources around the area assist with issues like bike repair, bike theft, and bike trails. Resources include:
